Vascular Surgery Q & A
What is vascular surgery?
Vascular surgery includes procedures to open and repair your veins and arteries everywhere except in your heart and brain. Dr. Caruso has extensive training in both traditional open surgeries and minimally invasive endovascular techniques to keep your blood flowing efficiently. He is committed to providing the health care you need, whether it’s conservative vascular care like medication and lifestyle modifications or a complicated surgery.
What are common vascular surgery procedures?
Dr. Caruso performs a wide range of vascular procedures. His signature treatment is RESTORE — a combination of innovative minimally invasive vascular treatments, provided on a same-day, outpatient basis to open your blood vessels with minimal trauma to the surrounding tissue.
He also provides a variety of vascular surgical procedures including:
Angioplasty
Angioplasty is a procedure that opens arteries narrowed by the accumulation of fatty plaque deposits. It’s often an endovenous procedure performed with a catheter. If your blood vessel is weak, Dr. Caruso may place a stent, which acts like scaffolding, to keep your vessel open.
Bypass surgery
During bypass surgery, Dr. Caruso grafts a blood vessel from another part of your body around a blockage to improve your circulation.
Thrombolytic therapy
Thrombolytic therapy is a procedure used to dissolve a blood clot. Dr. Caruso injects medication into your artery near the blood clot. The medication dissolves the clot while Dr. Caruso monitors the process.
Endovenous laser or radiofrequency treatments
Dr. Caruso also offers minimally invasive endovenous laser and radiofrequency procedures to remove varicose veins. During these procedures, he inserts a catheter into your vein and feeds it to the varicose vein using ultrasound guidance. He sends a fiber optic wire through the catheter to the varicose vein, then releases either the laser or radiofrequency energy to heat, seal, and close the varicose vein.
Dr. Caruso provides attentive follow-up care after your procedure and gives customized advice on how you should take care of yourself during your recovery.
Why would I need a vascular surgeon?
You need attention from a vascular surgeon like Dr. Caruso if you have signs of peripheral artery disease, varicose veins, or venous insufficiency. He also surgically places dialysis access, so you can get the dialysis treatments you need to clean your blood.
